Midhurst Community Hub seeks new listening volunteers

We’ve been asked by the Midhurst Community Hub to share the following information:

“IN TOUCH”   February 2023

The top issue discussed at the Midhurst Community Forums in May and November last year was loneliness and isolation. Connecting to people is one of the “Five Steps to Wellbeing” recommended by MIND as we all want to feel valued for who we are.

So (Keeping) “In Touch” is being set up as a telephone buddying service, whereby volunteer callers undertake to make 3 phone calls a week to people who would welcome a friendly chat.

We are now recruiting volunteer callers and would particularly welcome those in the rural parishes around Midhurst (e.g. Stedham, Rogate, Harting, Milland, Fernhurst )

There has to be some necessary admin around this to protect both the caller and the recipient of the call. So  volunteer callers are asked:

  • to complete this simple application form now
  • to sign a confidentiality form (to avoid gossiping)
  • to agree to being DBSd (safeguarding both caller and called)
  • to attend a briefing session (about Do’s and don’ts)
  • to committing to make 3 phone calls a week

We will then link volunteer callers to those wishing to hear a friendly voice each week. The calls can of course be made from home.

This is a lovely opportunity for those who may themselves not be able to get out much to make the calls ,and thereby to provide a valuable service to others. We hope to start “In Touch” calls in early April.

Book-a-Bus service expands..

Following the success of the “Book-a-Bus” service in rural areas around
Petworth and Chichester, the service has now expanded with the
introduction of the “96 Flex” zone serving those in the northwest area of
Chichester up to Midhurst.

“Book-a-Bus” is a demand-responsive transport system for those living or
working in the county’s rural areas with limited or no traditional bus
service. The “96 Flex” has no fixed timetable or route, instead operating
on the bookings it receives via the Ride Pingo app or via the call centre.
The ”’96 Flex’ Book-a-Bus” service travels around rural areas in north west Chichester
including Lavant, South Harting, West Marden, and Singleton.
Plans for further expansion to areas such as Westbourne, Stanstead Park,
West Ashling, Rogate, Nyewood, Little Torberry, Woodmancote, and
Forestside are expected later this spring.

“Book-a-Bus” is part of the West Sussex County Council’s Bus Service
Improvement Plan, funded by Central Government, that aims to make it
easier and more attractive for residents and visitors to travel by bus. To
celebrate the expansion, residents travelling via any of the “Book-a-Bus”
services can travel for free during the whole month of February.
Councillor Joy Dennis, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
“I am proud to share that ‘Book-a-Bus’ has had over 2,000 passengers
carried since its launch. The flexibility this service provides helps keep our
residents in rural areas connected with their communities and provide
continued access to any essential and leisure services they may need.
“I encourage anyone who hasn’t done so yet to give it a try.
“Ensuring that we help our residents keep connected is at the heart of our
strategic priorities as a council, so continually improving our transport
network with better bus services is very important as it helps us maintain
a sustainable and prosperous economy for all those in West Sussex.”

Roads Minister Guy Opperman said: “Local people deserve a modern,
reliable, and affordable public transport system. I’m delighted to have
worked alongside the local council and Gillian Keegan MP to give West
Sussex over £19 million to boost its bus services.
“This is a fantastic result for passengers north west of Chichester and in
Midhurst, who will enjoy this extended on-demand bus service to get
around Petworth and Chichester more easily and with greater flexibility.”

Matt Roberts, Chief Executive Officer for Community Transport Sussex
(CTS), the company providing the service for the county council, said:
“We have seen how the local community values this flexible transport
service and are very excited to expand the service to more passengers.
“As a charity transport provider, we see first-hand how vital it is for those
in rural areas to keep connected with their communities.”

To “Book-a-Bus” or plan your journey, download the Ride Pingo app or
contact our call centre at 01243 858854. Anyone can use the service
anytime between 7.00am to 7.00pm, Monday through Saturday.
Passengers travelling in groups can request up to 5 seats per booking,
subject to availability.

Preliminary works at Egmont Road

We have been advised by Metis Homes that some preliminary tree protection works at the approved Egmont Road site are beginning. In addition some archaeological trenching is being dug w/c 9th October and then, all being well, the initial road access works down the side of the Conifers’ car park during the school half term from 23rd October. The aim is to get that work done during half term to maximise health and safety.

Mass bulb planting

The Midhurst Green Volunteers have co-ordinated a project to buy and plant over 4000 bulbs in and around Easebourne and Midhurst in the next few weeks – which come spring will brighten up our verges, banks and numerous areas around our communities.

But to do this we need your help!

The planting sessions are on the 7th October and then again on the 14th October. There will be 2 teams, covering Easebourne and Midhurst on both of those dates.

Please check your diaries and come along for an hour if you can. The team will be meeting at 8am on both dates, at the corner of Hollist Lane and Canada Grove.. and at St Annes Hill.

How safe do you feel in your community?

Community Safety Partnerships across West Sussex are asking residents how safe they feel in their local communities.

The online consultation, which launched on Monday 18 September, will be open to people of all ages to share their experiences of crime and anti-social behaviour in their local areas and will take around 10 minutes to complete.

The responses will allow the partnerships to further improve their understanding of the local communities and see whether their current priorities reflect the experiences of the residents living there.

Information from the consultation will be shared with the Safer West Sussex Partnership, which brings together the six district and borough Community Safety Partnerships, along with Sussex Police, the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, West Sussex Fire and Rescue, West Sussex County Council and other key agencies.

Mark Andrews, Chair of the Safer West Sussex Partnership, said: “The Community Safety consultation is an excellent opportunity for all residents of West Sussex to have their say on crime and anti-social behaviour in their local neighbourhood.

“It is a really important subject that affects everyone, and many people will have experienced or witnessed different issues in their surroundings, which they may or may not have reported.

“We hope that this consultation will give people the opportunity to have their say anonymously and help make their neighbourhood a safer place to live.”

Anyone without access to the internet, or who may struggle with filling in online forms, is encouraged to visit a West Sussex library, where free Wi-Fi and computers with internet access are available.

Library members may use the computers for free, for a maximum of two hours per day and if you are not a member, you can join on arrival at no cost.

Libraries also have Digital Volunteers available who offer free help in libraries and can support residents to complete the consultation. To arrange this, please contact the Library Digital Support team on 0330 222 3455 or library.digital.support@westsussex.gov.uk.

Parish Design Statement officially adopted by SDNPA

We are very pleased to be able to confirm that on 9 February 2023 the South Downs National Park Authority adopted the Easebourne Parish Design Statement as a Supplementary Planning Document (SDP).

This document sets out a framework of guidelines and principals relating to design matters against which future planning applications will be assessed. The Parish Council would like to thank the volunteers who worked so hard on this project over the last 3 years: without their persistence and determined endeavours, nothing would have been achieved.
