The Angel Update – SDNPA 7th June

We apologise for the delay in uploading the latest press release from the SDNPA, issued on the 7th June:

“Work has continued apace on the scaffolding to support the façade of the Angel Inn and the adjoining listed buildings with contractors now working extended days until 7pm.

The seven-week programme (from 15 May) is currently on track.

Unfortunately, we are saddened to report that the contractors, who are working long days to get the work completed as soon as possible, are facing a daily barrage of shouting and abuse from a small section of the public. This has meant that the contractors, who were staying in a local business in Midhurst while doing the work, have now been forced to move to accommodation outside of Midhurst, increasing their travel time and meaning less revenue to local businesses.

Last night there was an attack on the security guard by two members of the public, who we understand used cutters to attempt to enter the compound. The incident resulted in the security guard being taken to hospital for an injury sustained. The incident is now being investigated by Sussex Police. Additional security has been provided, including regular dog patrols.

We continue to be committed to securing the listed buildings as safely and as quickly as possible, which will enable West Sussex County Council to reopen the road. While we fully understand the frustrations felt by the local community and businesses, we cannot ask hard-working contractors to face daily abuse and physical attack. We are therefore making a plea to everyone to let the contractors get on peacefully with the much-needed work.

We will continue to provide weekly updates on progress.  Once the work is completed, we will hand over to West Sussex County Council, as the Highways Authority, to reopen the road.”

We have produced an FAQs specifically around the shoring up work and this can be found at www.southdowns.gov.uk/midhurst-fire-updates/

A more detailed FAQs, prepared by Chichester District Council which includes information about business support and highways issues. The FAQs can be found here: www.chichester.gov.uk/article/37648/Midhurst-fire-Frequently-asked-questions

Summer in Easebourne Park

Easebourne Park was looking fabulous in the sunshine today, with the new Roundhouse Roof and  our Eco-loo.

It takes a lot of work to keep the Park looking as good as it does. Some of this work is carried out by contractors but a lot of smaller jobs are undertaken by an amazing team of volunteers – Friends of Easebourne Parish – who trim, chop, tidy, plant, water and litter pick!

Lead by Frank, it’s a small team but they do a fantastic job keeping the Park (and other areas of the village) looking it’s best for everyone else to enjoy. If you can lend a hand with some of their tasks, please do get in touch with the Parish Council or frepsec@btinternet.com

The Angel Update – SDNPA 2nd June

Work to install support scaffolding is well under way and on schedule.

This week specialist contractors have completed scaffolding on the side wall of the Angel Inn. Contractors are also making good progress on installing the scaffolding to support the façade of the Angel Inn.

Next week work will begin to install support scaffolding on the adjacent building and contractors will be working longer days until 7pm.

A number of chimneys will then have to be demolished, or removed down to a safe height, as they are at risk of uncontrolled collapse.

The seven-week programme (from 15 May) is on track, and we will continue to provide weekly updates on progress.  Once the work is completed, we will hand over to West Sussex County Council, as the Highways Authority, to reopen the road.

We have produced an FAQs specifically around the shoring up work and this can be found at www.southdowns.gov.uk/midhurst-fire-updates/

The multi-agency recovery group has also created a more detailed FAQs, prepared by Chichester District Council which includes information about business support and highways issues. The FAQs can be found here: www.chichester.gov.uk/article/37648/Midhurst-fire-Frequently-asked-questions

Please note the SDNPA is dealing specifically with the shoring up of the buildings and the relevant planning issues only.

Meeting from 7.30am at the Rotherfield and working until around 10am, please pop along at any stage to lend a hand if you can. The more hands we have the more can be achieved. Just bring a pair of gloves, everything else is provided.

SDNPA update now work has begun – 24th May

Specialist contractors started on site on 15 May and work is under way.

A crane has been on site this week to enable detailed inspections of the building to take place.

This is a complex project with significant health and safety considerations and the project will progress through a series of important stages during the seven-week programme of work. There will be varying levels of activity on site depending where the contractors are in the programme.

The specialist contractors have to design and install support scaffolding to the facades of both listed buildings to prevent their collapse. They now have access to the buildings to do so. Support scaffolding has also to be installed to the flank wall of the Angel Inn, adjacent to Angel Yard, to prevent the collapse of this wall and to allow vehicular access into Angel Yard once again for the residents. A number of chimneys at the Angel Inn also have to be demolished or removed down to a safe height as they are at risk of uncontrolled collapse.

Press release from SDNPA 11th May

Today (11 May), the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) has appointed a contractor to ensure the fire-damaged listed buildings are safely and legally secured. This will then allow the road to be reopened in both directions.

The SDNPA, working with West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council, continues to actively liaise with the owners of the buildings, local businesses and other agencies involved to ensure that the necessary work begins as soon as possible. Our contractor aims to be on site on Monday 15 May. The work is expected to take seven weeks to complete.

This is not only the best option for the listed buildings, but is also the fastest option to enable the road to be safely opened.

The multi-agency recovery group has created a detailed FAQs, prepared by Chichester District Council, that is updated as new information becomes available.

We will continue to provide updates on progress
